BUCKEYE, Ariz. -- Authorities are trying to determine who shot a 69-year-old man along state Route 85 west of Buckeye.

Maricopa County Sheriff's officials were contacted around 9 a.m. Wednesday about a shooting victim at a truck stop at Interstate 10.

Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Brandon Jones says the man and his girlfriend were visiting the Buckeye area when they stopped in a desert area near the Gila River.

The man was then shot, but it remains unclear who did it and why.

Jones says the wounded man and his girlfriend drove to a gasoline station and asked for help.

Authorities say the man was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover.

His name hasn't been released yet.
