MESA, Ariz. -- A Mesa City Council member has announced her resignation, effective next month.

District 5 councilwoman Dina Higgins announced Tuesday that she was resigning as of Aug. 15.

She joined the council in 2008 and was re-elected in 2010.

Higgins informed Mesa Mayor Scott Smith and the rest of the council of her plans by phone and followed up with a letter to the City Clerk.

She cited the demands of her full-time job as a business development manager and the required weekly travel as reasons for her resignation.

City officials say they'll release information on an appointment to fill the temporary vacancy on the council in the near future.
