FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- The former fire chief in Goodyear is headed north to take the same position with the city of Flagstaff.

Mark Gaillard will replace current Chief Mike Iacona, who is retiring from the Flagstaff Fire Department.

Gaillard was chosen from among 70 applicants submitted for the job. Flagstaff city officials narrowed the candidates down to four, and announced the selection of Gaillard on Friday.

In Goodyear, Gaillard oversaw the transition of the fire department from a volunteer force to one that now has more than 100 employees. He recently retired from the department.

Gaillard said he's ready to get his feet on the ground in Flagstaff and get to work.

A Flagstaff city spokeswoman said Gaillard's salary and start date are being negotiated.
