PHOENIX -- From Tempe to Tucson, law enforcement officers across Arizona will be out in full force looking for drunken drivers during the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Tempe Police Chief Tom Ryff says DUI enforcement has been a top priority for the department, and his officers plan to be visible throughout the downtown district on Thursday and Friday.

In Pima County, sheriff's deputies and Tucson police will be conducting DUI checkpoints and extra patrols through the weekend.

Enforcement actions are also planned in Flagstaff, Sierra Vista and numerous other cities.

Authorities were urging people to use designated drivers or call for a ride to avoid driving drunk.

Federal statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes kill someone in the U.S. every 53 minutes.
