GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. -- A hiker who died in Grand Canyon National Park last weekend has been identified as a woman from Virginia.

Park officials said Wednesday that 48-year old Sibylle Borger of Fredericksburg was in a group of five people on the first day of a backcountry hiking permit.

Officials received an emergency call around 3:30 p.m. Sunday about an unconscious hiker some three quarters of a mile above Phantom Ranch on the South Kaibab Trail.

Park rangers began CPR on the woman upon arrival, but efforts were unsuccessful.

Borger's body was flown by helicopter to the South Rim and transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner.

The medical examiner's office is investigating the death along with National Park Service officials.
