SAN LUIS, Ariz. -- Federal authorities say a man is in custody for allegedly trying to smuggle nearly 31 pounds of cocaine into southern Arizona.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers say 12 packages of cocaine were found beneath the cowl of a vehicle's windshield.
CBP officers referred the suspect's SUV for inspection Monday at the port of entry in San Luis and they say a narcotics detection dog alerted them to the presence of drugs.
Authorities say the cocaine had an estimated street value of more than $278,000.
They say 29-year-old Roberto Villareal-Suarez was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.
CBP officials say Villareal-Suarez is a U.S. citizen, but his hometown wasn't immediately available and they didn't know if he had an attorney yet.
