Temperatures to soar across Arizona, rest of West

PHOENIX -- Dangerously hot temperatures are expected across Arizona through the weekend with the National Weather Service warning residents to take precautions and limit strenuous outdoor activities to mornings and evenings.

Highs in the Phoenix area were expected to reach 104 degrees on Tuesday and continue to climb through Saturday when forecasters said the heat could set a record.

The historical record high for the same Saturday in June is 117 degrees set in 1994. The forecast for Saturday is for 118 degrees.

Temperatures around northern Arizona are expected to approach all-time highs, as well, for June and July. The heat wave comes with a strong high pressure system expected to build over the entire western U.S. centered over northern Arizona.
