Crews work to corral wildfire south of Grand Canyon

TUSAYAN, Ariz. -- A wildfire burning south of the Grand Canyon was 20 percent contained, and crews are expecting to corral it Thursday.

The Halfway Fire, about five miles east of Tusayan, has burned 220 acres on U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service lands.

Grand Canyon National Park spokeswoman Maureen Oltrogge said it's burning in an area that had been thinned in the past, allowing for moderate fire behavior.

Officials had evacuated Grandview Point, about 12 miles east of Grand Canyon Village, as a precaution but lifted the order late Wednesday.

Oltrogge said no other evacuations or closures are expected.

No structures are threatened.

The cause of the fire that began Wednesday afternoon is under investigation.
