PHOENIX -- A Gilbert man accused of manslaughter in a fatal freeway crash has had his bond set at $500,000.

Maricopa County prosecutors say 27-year-old Carl William Day also is being held on suspicion of criminal damage and failing to stay at the scene of an accident with a death or injury.

Day had his initial court appearance Wednesday and doesn't have an attorney yet. A status conference is set for June 25 with a preliminary hearing two days later.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Day was driving an SUV that rear-ended another vehicle Monday night on Interstate 17 near Anthem.

Authorities say 61-year-old Victor House was killed in the crash.

They say Day may have been driving impaired and results of a blood test still are pending.
