PHOENIX — A worker who was killed Wednesday morning at a Mesa, Ariz., construction site has been identified.
Steven Ariston, 43, was killed when a support structure of a bridge under construction collapsed.
Three steel beams crashed down, trapping Ariston and Alejandro Meraz under thousands of pounds of debris at Warner and Hawes roads, near Loop 202. Mesa Fire said Meraz, 20, was rushed to a Scottsdale hospital in critical condition. He has been stabilized.
The bridge under construction is part of State Route 24, which will connect with Loop 202.
Mesa Fire spokesman Forrest Smith said the work being done was for temporary structures.
An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
Ariston lived in Peoria, Ariz.
