PHOENIX -- A hatchet-carrying homeless man accused of breaking into a Chandler home and attempting to sexually assault a sleeping woman has pleaded not guilty.

Maricopa County prosecutors said 19-year-old Francisco Antonio Moreno entered his plea Monday. His next scheduled court date is July 30.

Moreno was arrested June 1 on suspicion of burglary, attempted sexual assault, kidnapping, robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and preventing the use of a telephone in an emergency.

Police said the victim was awakened by a man she didn't know pulling her pants down.

The man is accused of grabbing a hatchet that he had placed on a nightstand near the bed as the victim grabbed her cellphone. They struggled for the phone, during which time the victim's left wrist was cut by the hatchet.
