CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Authorities said a 61-year-old woman was killed just before midnight Thursday when she was struck by an SUV while walking in a traffic lane of Interstate 10 in Chandler.
The accident occurred in the freeway's eastbound lanes, which were closed for several hours early Friday. The woman's identity is being withheld pending notification of relatives.
According to Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves, the woman was walking in the traffic lane next to the high-occupancy vehicle lane when she was struck.
Graves said the SUV stopped and was rammed by a tractor-trailer rig. A third vehicle struck debris.
Two people in the SUV that struck the woman received minor injuries.
Graves said DPS doesn't know why the woman was walking on the freeway.
