PHOENIX -- Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has named a former state lawmaker who also served in the U.S. Air Force as the new Department of Veterans' Services chief.

Brewer announced Tuesday that Janson Vogt would replace Joey Strickland after he was forced to step down as director in April.

Strickland was reprimanded for hiring former state Rep. Terri Proud after Gov. Jan Brewer explicitly told him not to. Proud lost her job at the same time after she told a reporter that menstrual cycles might be too problematic for women to be in combat.

Brewer says Vogt served in Afghanistan, Japan and Qatar.

He was appointed to the Arizona House in 2010 and was elected to serve one term later that year.
