MESA -- Authorities have arrested a man who allegedly killed his girlfriend with a baseball bat in Mesa.
Maricopa County Sheriff's officials said 34-year-old Jose Gonzalez-Esparza called 911 on Monday night to report that his girlfriend was dead.
Deputies responded to a trailer park near Main Street and Ellsworth and found the body of 45-year-old Maria Gomez inside her trailer.
They say Gonzalez-Esparza was found hiding in the neighborhood and was taken into custody.
Deputies say Gonzalez-Esparza allegedly admitted hitting his girlfriend in the face and head repeatedly with a bat during an argument.
"His initial statements stated to us that someone had killed his girlfriend at the trailer where they live," said Joaquin Enriquez with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. "Through the investigation, it was obviously revealed that the caller indeed turned out to be the suspect of the homicide."
Enriquez said Gomez and Gonzalez-Esparza had been in a relationship for about two years.
Authorities didn't immediately know Tuesday whether Gonzalez-Esparza has an attorney yet. He is being booked into Maricopa County Jail for second degree murder.
