PHOENIX -- Authorities have released the names of a couple found dead in the Ahwatukee Foothills area of Phoenix in an apparent murder-suicide.

Phoenix police said officers responded to the home southwest of Phoenix about 12:30 p.m. Monday after getting a call and found a man and woman dead in a bedroom.

Police identified the couple Tuesday as 61-year-old Stanley E. Mahowald and his 61-year-old wife Barbara J. Mahowand.

Police said both victims were found with gunshot wounds and it appears to be a murder-suicide because the home's front door was locked and there was no sign of forced entry.

Police said nobody else was found in the home and a call came from a relative of the victims who lived nearby.

They said investigators believe Stanley Mahowald fatally shot his wife and then himself.
