AG: Phoenix auto repair shop closed after sting

PHOENIX - State authorities said a Phoenix auto repair shop has been closed down after an undercover operation.

Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne announced Thursday that Sun Valley Towing was ordered by a judge to pay $610,000 in civil penalties and nearly $68,000 in restitution to customers.

The AG's office said the judgment was based on nearly 60 consumer complaints of deceptive business practices and the state's own sting operation.

Horne said an auto repair expert shut off an undercover vehicle's fuel cutoff switch and then called Sun Valley Towing for service.

"We had turned off the switch first for fuel and then they came and towed it," he said. "And they saw what was wrong and turned the switch back on. But then they charged our guy $340 to replace a fuel pump, which was not necessary and which they didn't do."
