PHOENIX - U.S. Rep. Trent Franks says he can't criticize Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer and other Republicans supporting the expansion of Medicaid under provisions of the federal Affordable Care Act.

The Arizona Republican issued a statement Thursday saying that although he opposes "Obamacare" and has co-sponsored legislation barring funding for Medicaid expansion, he won't attack Arizona politicians for pushing it here. He says they were forced into an "impossible conundrum" by what he called "an irresponsible federal government."

Brewer is pushing the Legislature to authorize expanding Medicaid to an additional 300,000 poor Arizonans. The Senate has passed an expansion bill and the House could act next week.

Brewer spokesman Matthew Benson says the governor spoke with Franks earlier this year when she visited Washington. He says Franks understands she can't repeal the law.
