BENSON, Ariz. -- A 33-year-old Benson man is accused of setting a May 21 brush fire to try to prevent the arrest of a suspected accomplice in a burglary.

Benson Police Chief Paul Moncada accused Robert Vance Bowling of setting the fire to divert police looking for the suspected accomplice.

The Sierra Vista Herald reported that the fire resulted in the evacuation of 20 homes and the temporary closure of part of Interstate 10.

Moncada said the fire was set the same day Bowling was to be sentenced in the burglary of a golf course.

Bowling was arrested May 28, and Moncada said he was sentenced Monday to five years in prison in the burglary.

Bowling faces charges of arson, criminal damage and other crimes stemming from the fire.
