TUCSON, Ariz. -- The longtime artistic director of the Arizona Theater Company plans to step down, saying he's ready for other challenges and no longer wants to commute between Phoenix and Tucson.

The Arizona Daily Star reports that it will be midway through David Ira Goldstein's 22nd season as ATC's artistic director when he leaves in December.

ATC is based in Tucson but also stages performances in Phoenix, and Goldstein says the regular commute is a big reason for his decision.

Board Chairman Robert Glaser says ATC will likely conduct a national search for a replacement.
