MESA, Ariz. -- Mesa police are investigating the death of a man who was stunned by a Taser while being arrested by federal marshals on a parole violation.

Police say 25-year-old Joseph Moreno was arrested Thursday night on a warrant for aggravated assault.

They say he was a convicted felon and had prior arrests for drug offenses.

Police say the Taser was used when Moreno wouldn't follow commands during the arrest. He then was handcuffed and examined by paramedics who determined he was OK as he awaited transport to jail.

Police say Moreno started having slurred speech and was sweating profusely. He was given water and paramedics were called.

Moreno was taken to a Mesa hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause of death.
