Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) called for the resignation of an Internal Revenue Service official on Thursday.
McCain and Levin sent a letter to Daniel Werfel, Acting Commissioner of the IRS, to remove Lois Lerner, who is the director of the Office of Exempt Organizations for the IRS.
In the letter, McCain and Levin claim that Lerner failed to disclose information, despite having several opportunities, about the IRS unfairly investigating certain groups.
Lerner’s branch oversees the tax filings of about 1.6 million different organizations.
Lerner was removed from her post shortly after the letter was submitted.
