SURPRISE, Ariz. ó A 17-year-old boy who was playing a game similar to cops and robbers died after falling from the bed of a pickup truck.

Surprise police Sgt. Mike Donovan says Andrew Arellanes fell late Saturday night. The Valley Vista High School student and quarterback had been standing in the back of the pickup truck when the driver hit a dip, swerved, and he was thrown from the truck.

Donovan says Arellanes hit the ground head-first. Arellanes was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

KPHO-TV reports that classmates left signs, candles and a T-shirt at the site Monday as a memorial.

No charges have been filed.
