PHOENIX -- A 36-year-old Phoenix woman has pleaded not guilty to a first-degree murder charge accusing her of fatally smothering her newborn daughter.

Nina Koistinen was arraigned Monday in Maricopa County Superior Court.

She was arrested in late April after an autopsy found signs of suffocation in the April 8 death of the infant, who was named Maya.

Authorities initially were called to a home on a report of a baby who had stopped breathing.
