Bees attack 5 hikers on southern Arizona trail

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Bees stung five hikers on a trail heading into a Catalina Mountains wilderness area over the weekend, including a 6-year-old boy who was hospitalized after showing symptoms of shock.

Authorities said four men were stung more than 150 times and the boy was stung more than 100 times during the attack.

The Arizona Daily Star reported it occurred Sunday morning on the Linda Vista Trail near North Oracle Road and East Calle Concordia.

The boy was hospitalized in stable condition, as were two of the four men. The other two declined to be taken to a hospital.

The attack occurred about a week after Tucson rock climber Steven Johnson was killed in a bee attack near Mount Hopkins in the Santa Rita Mountains south of Tucson.

Mesa Fire Captain Forrest Smith said try to remain calm around bees and that swatting at bees can attract even more.

Smith recommended running away without flailing of arms and get indoors if possible. If not, look for shade, but don't jump into a pool.

"Some insects, particularly Africanized honey bees, are known to hover above the water," he said.

More tips from the Mesa Fire Department:

Do not attempt to move bees or throw things at them.

Swarms that are close to apartment complexes, daycare centers and densely populated areas may need to be removed if they do not leave the area in a reasonable amount of time. Typically, swarms are transient and may set up temporary shelter for a few hours or days.

Mesa Fire and Medical Department does not typically eradicate bee swarms unless special circumstances are present (aggressive, attacking bees that cannot be isolated from the public).

If a beekeeper or exterminator is contacted for bees on a private residence or business, the owner/occupant assumes financial responsibility for said services.
