Arizona woman gets prison term in fake cancer case

PHOENIX -- A Gilbert woman has been sentenced to prison after admitting that she pretended to have cancer in order to collect donations.

A Maricopa County Superior Court spokesman said Judge John Ditsworth sentenced to Kelly Ann Wasko to 18 months in prison for theft under a plea agreement.

Wasko also was sentenced to concurrent probation terms for attempted theft and fraudulent schemes.

Wasko's scam began in December 2011 when she told her adult daughter that she needed a bone marrow transplant and her insurance policy would not cover it.

Her daughter, who lived in Colorado, built a Facebook fundraising page. More than $12,000 was collected for Wasko.

The daughter became suspicious of her mother's claims and contacted authorities.

Wasko was arrested in December 2012. She initially pleaded not guilty.
