PHOENIX -- A Phoenix couple is in custody in connection with the death of their 2-year-old son.

Phoenix police said 24-year-old Darnell Moses Alvarez and 21-year-old Davieanna Marlena Blake were arrested Thursday on suspicion of child abuse and first-degree murder.

Court documents released Friday show that the couple are the biological parents of the child.

Phoenix police and fire department paramedics found Alvarez and Blake outside an apartment complex Wednesday with the child on the ground.

Paramedics took the boy to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Medical examiners found large bruises on the child's legs, arms, backside and face and an autopsy showed the child had a lacerated liver and internal bleeding.

Police didn't immediately know Friday if either Alvarez or Blake had a lawyer yet.
