PHOENIX -- Phoenix officials say they will review a one-year contract extension to use red-light cameras at intersections and speed cameras in roving vans at least through June 2014.
They say staffers improperly renewed the yearly contract with Redflex Traffic Solutions without informing the city manager's office for their approval first.
The Arizona Republic says the contract was created in 2009 after Phoenix ended its contract with American Traffic Solutions.
There are 12 red-light cameras at fixed intersections programmed to photograph a vehicle when it runs a red light or makes an illegal right turn on a red light.
Phoenix also uses speed cameras in eight vans that move between school zones.
Critics have questioned the cameras' effectiveness, accuracy, cost and whether they constitute an invasion of privacy.
