PHOENIX -- A Phoenix woman accused of murdering and dismembering her mother has been sentenced to 22 years in prison.

Maricopa County prosecutors say 42-year-old Carol Hatley was sentenced Thursday after entering into a plea agreement for second-degree murder.

Phoenix police say 73-year-old Deborah Hatley was in the process of being dismembered at the home she shared with her daughter when officers arrived on the scene last July 30.

They say Carol Hatley didn't confess to killing her mother, but claimed she was wrapping her in plastic bags in order to take her to a hospital.

Officers reported finding large garbage bags that they believe she was planning to use to get rid of the body.

Police say the mother and daughter had a tumultuous relationship with a history of domestic incidents.
