Suit filed vs hotel chains in Mesa over alleged rapes

PHOENIX (AP)- A lawsuit accuses two hotels in Mesa with failing to screen a registered sex offender before hiring him and he allegedly raped two guests.

Civil complaints filed in Maricopa County Superior Court stem from police reports in which two women claim the night-shift clerk used a master key to enter their rooms and rape them.

Mesa police in December recommended filing sexual assault charges against the 40-year-old man. However, investigators didn't arrest him at the time for either alleged assault, citing a lack of probable cause.

The Arizona Republic reports reports the man was convicted in 1996 of aggravated criminal sexual assault.

He was a clerk trainee at Best Western Superstition Springs Inn in 2011 and at Marriott Fairfield Inn & Suites in 2012 when the alleged attacks occurred.
