AVONDALE, Ariz. -- A Maricopa County Sheriff's detention officer is in custody for allegedly stabbing his father.

Avondale police say 27-year-old CJ Joe is suspected of wounding his dad with a Swiss Army knife at his father's home Sunday morning.

He's being held on suspicion of one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of attempted second-degree murder.

Authorities say 55-year-old Curtis Joe was listed in stable condition Monday at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix.

CJ Joe's sister told Phoenix TV station KPHO that the father and son were arguing about politics when the stabbing occurred.

Sheriff's officials say Joe works at the Durango Jail, has been a detention officer since 2005 and has no discipline history or employment issues.

Officials say Joe currently is on leave without pay.
