Gov. Jan Brewer vetoes bill raising militia age

PHOENIX -- Gov. Jan Brewer has vetoed a bill sponsored by an outspoken opponent of her proposal to expand Medicaid that would have allowed people above the age of 45 to volunteer for the state militia.

Republican Rep. Carl Seel's bill would have opened the force designed for emergencies but never used in modern memory to older Arizonans.

Brewer said in a letter that her `primary reasons' for Wednesday's veto of House Bill 2433 were that it amends a law pertaining to the National Guard, the state guard and the unorganized militia and all need to have similar rules. She also said it referred to people ``capable of bearing arms'' and a ``state guard'' that hasn't been established.

The militia provision is included in the state Constitution adopted in 1910.
