Arizona man pleads guilty in drug trafficking case

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- An Arizona man has pleaded guilty to methamphetamine trafficking charges in New Mexico.

Prosecutors say 19-year-old Kevin James Fitzgerald of Tucson entered his plea Tuesday in a federal court in Las Cruces.

Fitzgerald and a co-defendant were arrested in January after U.S. Border Patrol agents found more than nine pounds of methamphetamine in a vehicle Fitzgerald was driving.

The vehicle was stopped at a border checkpoint near Truth or Consequences.

Authorities say the meth was in tin foil and wrapped in cellophane bundles.

In a plea agreement with prosecutors, Fitzgerald admitted that he and his co-defendant were transporting the drugs from Arizona to Nebraska.

Fitzgerald will remain detained pending his sentencing hearing, which hasn't been scheduled yet.

Prosecutors say he faces anywhere from 10 years to life in prison.
