Man enters not guilty plea in Phoenix in-law shooting

PHOENIX -- A Phoenix man charged with fatally shooting his brother-in-law has pleaded not guilty.

Steven Earl Lomax Jr. entered his plea Monday in Arizona Superior Court and is scheduled to go before Commissioner Steven Lynch on May 29.

Lomax Jr. was arrested last month for the death of 42-year-old Richard Swann.

According to police, Lomax's sister, who is the victim's wife, called police to report her husband had been shot multiple times.

Police said Lomax then took the phone, admitted shooting Swann and shot him again while speaking with the 911 operator.

Lomax surrendered when officers arrived.

According to police, Lomax later told a detective that shooting Swann was the only way to end Swann's physical and mental abuse of Lomax's sister.

It was unclear if Lomax had an attorney.
