PHOENIX -- Arizona Republican lawmakers and activists are ringing the alarm about terrorist and communist plots led by the government.

The unfounded claims took center stage during a hearing at the Arizona Legislature this week.

Republican Sen. Judy Burges opened the meeting by warning that "far-reaching and intrusive government" is targeting private property rights and individual choice.

Burges' bill banning local governments from recognizing United Nations declarations was passed by the Arizona Senate in March.

Republican Rep. Bob Thorpe said during the hearing that anti-government supporters should fire a gun in the air instead of clapping. He says he was joking.

But Democratic Sen. Steve Farley says it was inappropriate to joke about shooting in a government building.

He says Republicans are riling up emotional people by attacking the federal government.
