PHOENIX -- Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has signed a law designed to bar a student group from receiving fees collected by the three state universities.
House Bill 2169 was a reaction to the Arizona Students' Association's spending of $122,000 to support an unsuccessful 2012 ballot measure for a sales tax increase.
The bill's sponsor, Republican Rep. John Kavanagh of Fountain Hills, said it's wrong for student fees to be used for politics. Democratic opponents of the bill argued that it would deprive students of representation on issues such as tuition increases and argued that's always been the groups' mission.
The law signed Friday prohibits the universities from sending some student fees to groups not directly under the oversight of the Arizona Board of Regents. The ASA fits that description.
