BAGDAD, Ariz. -- The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office says a construction worker has been killed in an accident at a copper mine about 100 miles northwest of Phoenix.

The worker was identified as 30-year-old Alvin Thomas of Many Farms.

Authorities say that on Thursday afternoon, Thomas was part of a crew fitting a row of large pipes together when one of the pipes came loose and struck him in the head.

The pipe weighed more than 5,000 pounds.

The Bagdad Fire Department responded, but Thomas could not be resuscitated.

Thomas was a contract worker with the Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold Mine in Bagdad.

The sheriff's office says the Arizona State Mine Inspector's Office was notified and will be conducting an investigation.
