PHOENIX -- An 11-year-old Pinal County girl has died in what's being called an apparent accidental shooting at her family home near Casa Grande.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Tamra Ingersoll says Joan Plumb died late Thursday night at a Phoenix hospital after being flown from the Casa Grande hospital.

Ingersoll says initial investigation indicates that three other children ranging in age from 8 to 15 were with her in the family room of the home.

The girl's 15-year-old brother was showing his .22 rifle to an 11-year-old friend in the neighborhood before removing the clip from gun and leaving it unattended on the table.

The 11-year-old then picked up the rifle and when he mishandled it, the gun went off and accidentally struck the victim in the head.

The three other children included two siblings of the girl and a friend. The girl's father also was in the home at the time.

Ingersoll says the girl's wound was not self-inflicted.

Circumstances of the shooting are under investigation.
