ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona and her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, will give the commencement address at an upstate New York college in May.
Bard College, in the Hudson Valley 90 miles north of New York City, announced Wednesday that the couple will address more than 600 graduating students during commencement ceremonies on May 25.
College officials said the 42-year-old Giffords will receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters from the liberal arts school.
Giffords was among 13 people wounded in a January 2011 shooting outside a Tucson, Ariz., supermarket that left six others dead. The Democrat resigned from Congress a year later.
The shooting left Giffords partially blind with a paralyzed right arm and brain injury.
Kelly is a former space shuttle commander.
