NY man sentenced to life in prison for Phoenix murder
PHOENIX -- A New York man has been sentenced to natural life in prison for fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend with a screwdriver at her Phoenix apartment in 2009.
Maricopa County prosecutors said 43-year-old Dzevad Selimovic was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty to first-degree murder.
Authorities said Selimovic and 27-year-old Emina Redza dated for three months and lived together in Binghampton, N.Y., before she moved to Phoenix in August 2009.
Selimovic visited her the following month, but the couple reportedly had several arguments.
Prosecutors said Selimovic stabbed Redza in the face, throat, upper back and hands with a 6-inch, serrated tire-repair screwdriver and fled the scene in her car.
Hours after the attack, Phoenix police said Selimovic pulled up to a patrol car, told an officer about the stabbing and was arrested.
