FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- The state Game and Fish Department is looking for whoever was responsible for illegally killing a cow elk near Flagstaff.

Wildlife manager Lee Luedeker said the shooting could have happened over the weekend of March 16.

He said the animal was shot twice with a centerfire rifle from Lake Mary Road, about 12 miles southeast of Flagstaff.

The elk was discovered about 100 yards off the road.

Investigators said they believe whoever shot it was scared off by another vehicle, was spotlighting or randomly fired at the animal.
