Invasive mussels removed from Arizona's Lake Powell

PAGE, Ariz. -- More than a dozen invasive mussels discovered at Lake Powell have been removed from the lake.

Boat inspections and decontamination stations have kept quagga mussels from establishing themselves at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area on the Arizona-Utah border.

The mussels have multiplied quickly in other waterways across the West, clogging pipes and water intakes, and depleting food sources used by aquatic creatures.

Glen Canyon ecologist Mark Anderson said Wednesday that none of the 14 adult quagga mussels recently found in Lake Powell were close enough together to mate.

The mussels had been attached to moored vessels and dock structures at the Wahweap Marina.

A local business had reported four small shells on a boat that had been pulled for maintenance.
