TEMPE, Ariz. — Authorities say a 23-year-old man who was released from a federal prison earlier this month is accused of beating and raping a woman in Tempe.
Police Sgt. Michael Pooley says Lane Halona attacked the woman as she was walking home from work near Mill Avenue at about 4:30 a.m. on March 17.
Pooley says Halona had been released three days earlier after serving a 23-month sentence for aggravated assault and DUI.
Halona is accused of hitting the woman on the head, then dragging her into an alley where he continued to beat her.
Police later found him sleeping near where the assault took place. Officers say he was curled up on the ground and had wrapped himself in the woman's jacket.
Halona is charged with two counts of sexual assault, aggravated assault and kidnapping.
