MESA, Ariz. — One dog is dead and three others are being treated at an animal clinic after a swarm of bees attacked the pets in a Mesa backyard.

Phoenix television station KNXV reports that the dogs were stung hundreds of times each. The incident happened Thursday in Christiane Giovanetti's backyard near Ellsworth Road and University Drive.

Giovanetti says the dogs were banging on the window and trying to get away from the bees but there was nothing she could do. She was stung 10 times and her 7-year old lab-mix Belle died.

Her other three dogs are improving, but she says it's too soon to tell if they will survive.

A beehive was found in the chimney of the vacant house next door, but it's unclear what stirred the bees to attack.
