MCSO seizes 2 tons of marijuana, make 9 arrests
PHOENIX -- The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says it has seized two tons of marijuana and arrested nine illegal immigrants in two unrelated cases of drug trafficking and human smuggling.
Sherifff's deputies seized more than 4,000 pounds of marijuana Thursday in the Vekol Valley area off Interstate 8 near Gila Bend.
The seizure came after deputies discovered two trucks abandoned and concealed by camouflage tarps.
On Thursday night, authorities spotted an SUV with a California license plate speeding north of the Phoenix metropolitan area.
Sheriff's officials say nine people from El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico were found inside the vehicle and believed to be headed to Nevada and Oregon.
They say four people were jailed on suspicion of human smuggling. Two juveniles and three other adults were turned over to immigration officials.
