Four Arizona air traffic control towers will be closed soon because of sequestration-related cuts, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a release.

The four towers that will be closed are located at Glendale Municipal Airport, Phoenix Goodyear Airport, Laughlin-Bullhead International Airport and Ryan Field in Tucson. Closures begin April 7 and will take four weeks to complete.

"We will work with the airports and the operators to ensure the procedures are in place to maintain the high level of safety at non-towered airports," said FAA Administrator Michael Huerta in the release.

The City of Phoenix Aviation Department released a statement that the Goodyear airport would "continue to operate with a pilot-to-pilot communications system." The airport is home to the Airline Training Center of Arizona, which trains pilots for Lufthansa Airlines of Germany. The center previously said it would move operations if the tower closed.

In a statement, Tucson's Ryan Field said it petitioned the FAA to keep its tower open, to no avail.

The Tucson Airport Authority is grateful to our area's elected representatives for their assistance and support in making our case for keeping Ryan's tower open. We are disappointed in this decision given the significant safety and economic benefits the tower contributes to our community and southern Arizona.

In total, the FAA will close 149 towers, down from the original 189 towers that were estimated to close.

The FAA used four considerations to decide which towers to close. Towers were considered based on their importance to national security, their impact on the economy, the extent to which the tower is used as relief to nearby hubs and the tower's impact on transportation, communication and financial networks.

The federal cuts that came with the sequester slashed the FAA's budget by $637 million.

Its not the presidents constitutional responsibility to pass a balanced budget. That job belongs to Congress. If you dont like the way this country spends its money, quit putting the SAME people back in Congress. Vote them out.

    smaller gov is a must
Great example of why we need smaller government. When government screws up it affects lots of things but if a private/public company they are smarter making better money decisions.

    Very well, now privatize it.
I am fine with government not being able to afford to pay federal employees and now have to close these towers. Now that the federal government has declared they cannot afford it or manage it properly, then let private businesses take it over. And now that private businesses will take over airports, they can remove all federal employees and all the regulations associated with federal employees, and make it a profitable business. Much like the USPS, they designed a system that is not sustainable, and now it needs to go.

I don't see an issue here. Planes will not fall out of the sky. This is no worse than when PATCO was fired. The difference here is that the feds want to scare folks with the 'sequester'. (With PATCO, the shoe was on the other hand ~Airplane) So... When will congress actually pass a budget for the American People? (You know... Them folkses they claims to represent?) This is not a Democratic issue, nor is it a Republican issue. This is simply 2 sides of the same coin involving kids that never learned how to play in a sandbox in kindergarten.

    Good points, Mallard . . .
Except that the sandbox was a great venue throughout US history until the DEMS . . . overrun by imposters under the guise of DEMs . . . decided to do away with the sandbox and paved their side over. So it is no longer an issue of playing well with others in the sandbox, but rather resisting the switch to roller derby. It has become a whole different game with a whole different purpose.

    Hit us where it hurts
The budget is not being cut. This is political back stabbing by an irresponsible and ruthless administration. In the meantime they are cutting programs in our military and for education programs for our G.I.s and sending billions to the Muslim Brotherhood and other enemies of the USA. We are being played and if you're not outraged your either not paying attention or braindead, or just plain stupid.
