PHOENIX -- Walmart is bringing to the Valley what might be the future of how customers checkout in stores.

The world's largest retailer introduced a program called "Scan & Go" last year to about 70 stores in Atlanta and Arkansas, where the company is headquartered.

The new program allows customers to scan items with their smartphones while shopping and later pay for them at self-checkout terminals.

Ashley Hardie, a spokeswoman for Walmart, explained what the new smartphone integration does for customers.

"Customers can use the Walmart iPhone app to scan the barcode of the items they would like to purchase," Hardie said. "The app keeps a list of all scanned items, allowing costumers to track their spending and bag items as they shop."

Hardie said the system uses QR codes, which are similar to barcodes, to call up all the items a customer has scanned.

"When you approach a self-checkout, you can scan the QR code that's displayed on the screen with your iPhone and this will wirelessly transfer the scanned items to the register," Hardie said. "And then complete the payment just as you would with any other transaction."

Scanning the items while shopping allows customers to avoid having to scan all their items at the checkout terminals, which could reduce lines and time spent waiting to pay.

Walmart originally implemented the program in response to changes in the way consumers were purchasing items, Hardie said.

"Our customers are shopping differently than they ever have before. They're using their mobile devices to search for coupons and compare prices," Hardie said. "So in order to meet their needs, we're experimenting with innovative technologies like mobile checkout."

The expansion has now jumped the program to more than 200 stores, in major cities including Dallas, Denver and Seattle. It has also come to nearly 30 Valley locations including Chandler, Phoenix, Mesa and Glendale.

And what if you decide to throw a couple of
extra things in your cart that you don't scan while shopping? This may help reduce lines at the check out, but when their monthly shrink increases, the lines will be at the door as security makes sure your receipt matches what you have in your cart or bags. Use to be to shoplift, you had to hide the item, now just act like your scanning it, bag it, and walk out the door. Brilliant. We'll all be paying higher prices soon to offset the new found shrink, and additional security people.

    Walmart check out
Ahh yes...another reason to not staff live employee's. Self serve to it's finest. Has society evolved to a point where we can't 'wait' 3-5 minutes anywhere? A quick time study would show it takes just as long to scan and bag each item in the cart as it would at the register. Not to mention standing in the aisle. Accuracy however, is entirely another subject of it's own.

AMERICAN PEOPLE CUTTING THEIR OWN THROATS
When people think this is so great they aren't looking beyond today. Just think 10-12 years from now or whatever when your kid is looking for work (maybe as a cashier) , all of those jobs will be gone too as this is what you thought was such a great thing ! It's cutting your own throat. Jobs go away and Wal-Mart don't have to pay cashiers anymore! BEAUTIFUL.!... Maybe someday you'll need a supplemental income to your social security check and all you can do is cashier. SOOOORY... Remember back in 2013 you allowed this to happen. The world is coming to an end.

    never use self check out
i have never used self check out and will never use one. It promotes unemployment. after all i see 1 person standing doing nothing while 4 self check outs are open that is 3 people now unemployed and maybe a bagger or 2. when I was a teen my first job was bagging than got promoted to cashier it was great as a young person to learn about money, work ethics, learn more about people, got me off the streets. let the kids stay on the streets to commit crime or play video games all day.

If Technology Makes your Job Obsolete...
... and life easier for the consumer, then maybe you need to get a different job. This is a harsh and unfair thing to say, but it's true. Life is about adapting or dying. Learn to adapt. Technology has been making jobs obsolete for thousands of years. In the wake of old jobs, new jobs are created. There will still be a need for customer service and stocking positions. Someone will need to get a job fixing the machines.
