Phoenix police: Teenage burglary suspect shot dead

PHOENIX -- Authorities say a 17-year-old boy is dead after being shot in the chest in a West Phoenix neighborhood.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Trent Crump says the teen, a 15-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy burglarized a neighbor's home Tuesday near 83rd Avenue and Lower Buckeye and stole several items, including multiple weapons.

The trio returned home to go through the stash later when the girl grabbed one of the guns and, believing it was empty, pointed it at her friend and pulled the trigger.

Police say the 17-year-old was unresponsive and was taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition Tuesday afternoon.

He later died. Police are withholding his name.

The 15-year-old girl is being detained on homicide and burglary charges.

The 16-year-old boy is being held on a burglary charge.
