PHOENIX -- Arizona lawmakers want to create a special license plate benefiting public school educators.

The so-called "extraordinary educators" special plate would raise money for educators who oversee activities, projects or lessons for students in kindergarten and grades one through eight. County school superintendents would help oversee the distribution of the money.

A Senate committee is slated to vote on a bill establishing the plate Tuesday. The House of Representatives already passed the measure in a 50-6 vote.

There are 53 special license plates that cost $25 each. The state keeps $8 for administrative costs and the rest goes to the charity associated with the plate.

It costs $32,000 to issue a new special plate. Proponents of the educators' license plate would have until 2016 to raise the $32,000.

    Save the hassle
Take the $32,000 it takes to make a new plate and give that money to the teachers. We don't need to have 54 different license plates in Az alone. Maybe 10 at the most.

Sure...Michoacan thats what it is! Let's throw more money at the problem, that'll fix it! I'm sure your right. Bad, bad legislator! Let's start with an audit of every district, then you'll find most of the money goes into the non-teacher employees of the micro bureaucracies er I mean districts.

    Costs money to audit, SgtH.
Tom Horne had his chance at finding and fixing any misspending. Huppenthal currently has these audit powers. You'll want to direct your wrath where it might do some good. Tell legislators to audit more often and see what they can find,,. Meantime, the courts has determined that legislative penny pinching falls well below any acceptable norm. It takes mone to build and operate schools. You might help cut costs by volunteering many of your ours towards educational purposes.

Seriously, how can we honestly coin the term "extraordinary educators" when AZ is always what, number 47 or less every year in terms of state ranking? School programs are great, once the goal of academic achievements has been obtained and every student has meet or exceed the minimum (worry about the maximum later). More money is not the real issue, don't think it ever was if we have great teachers.
