PHOENIX -- Authorities have released the name of an armed man who police fatally shot at an apartment in downtown Phoenix.

Police on Monday identified the man as 46-year-old William Alfred Shaw.

Two officers responded to a domestic violence call about 6:30 p.m. Sunday and when a woman answered the door, a man inside saw police and ordered them to leave.

Police say the man pointed the laser-equipped gun at a policeman.

An officer then exchanged fire with the man, who was shot and fell back into the apartment.

Special Assignment Unit officers later went into the apartment and found the man dead with the gun beside him.

One officer suffered minor cuts and abrasions.

Shaw's 41-year-old wife and another woman in the apartment escaped injury. Their names haven't been released yet.
