PHOENIX -- The husband of former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords went to a Tucson gun store a week ago to buy a .45-caliber handgun and a military-style rifle the day before he appeared with his wife at the supermarket where she was wounded in a rampage two years ago.

It didn't take long for the purchase to draw criticism from gun-rights supporters.

Mark Kelly said he bought the AR-15-style weapon to draw attention to the relative ease with which people can get the types of guns shooters in recent mass killings have, such as, the Newtown school and Colorado movie theater killings.

Gun-rights advocates attacked him for being a hypocrite for buying the same gun that he has been lobbying Congress to ban.

    And a .45 wasn't

    Elitist...
In Mr Kellys eyes, it is okay for him to own guns, but not for the average citizen. Liberals believe they are here to save us from ourselves. They want us to live by a different set of rules than they do. Put an AR15 in the hands of a citizen, it becomes an "assault rifle". Give them to Homeland security employess and the AR15 becomes a "self defense weapon". Hypocrisy runs rampant among the Elitist who run this country.

    For being a genius,
He really appears to be quite a buffoon. He dealt his personal cause a big blow with this completely unnecessary stunt. Time to close your mouth now Mr. Kelly.

    BS...
He screwed up and is back peddling. If he'd wanted people to see how easy it is he'd have recorded it or something AND he would have told people immediately after the purchase right? Nothing wrong with buying a gun, there is a problem with how easy it is to get one though.

    Buys the gun...
he wants to ban, somehow thinking no one would notice. Then says he planned to turn it in. Damage control, that's it. Why the extra mags. And the reason, to show how easy it is to buy makes no sense. Not only is he a hypocrite he has no sense.

Buying the rifle to make a point is akin to
